Live
a better life: why it is important?
There was a time, when the world’s
most devastating diseases occurred because
of infections from various pathogens.
As modern science progressed, man conquered
most of these through antibiotics with
vaccinations, innoculations leading
to complete eradication of some of these
dreaded killers. However, new sets of
equally lethal diseases are now threatening
us. Fortunately, these diseases, ironically
a byproduct of our affluent lifestyles,
are easily preventable. Irresponsible
dietary habits, perpetual stress, smoking,
excessive alcohol consumption and irregular
working hours all contribute towards
these diseases.
Face a few
facts-:
- One out of every
4 persons in India is a diabetic.
- In another 20 years,
India will have the largest population
of diabetics in the world.
- In urban India,
one out of every 4 adults has hypertension
or high blood pressure.
- Diabetics and hypertensives
account for 2/3rd of the total cases
of kidney failure.
- 10 million new cases
of cancer are reported every year
and over 6 million people die of
cancer every year. Oral and lung
cancer, directly attributable to
tobacco consumption, is the biggest
killer amongst Indian males.
- One in 30 women
in the age group of 20-74 years
has breast cancer.
- Over 30% women above
the age of 50 years are likely to
develop osteoporosis.
Most of the diseases
are “silent”. You often
do not have any early symptoms. Hence
regular screening tests are the only
way for early detection. All these
diseases are quite debilitating. They
seriously impair
normal life and if left untreated,
lead to complications and may even
cause death.
Fortunately, these diseases can be
easily prevented and even fully cured
if detected early. Some of these diseases
can be ‘managed’ so that
you can lead a near normal life. All
that you need to do is to make slight
modifications in your lifestyle, eat
regularly and responsibly, exercise,
avoid stress and sleep well. Regular
health check-ups coupled with these
lifestyle changes, can go a long way
in the prevention, early detection
and cure of these diseases.
